Are we using smartphones more than we need to? - The darkside of our smartphones

Image
As a precious gift of 21st century's technology, smartphones fill a great part of our daily lives. Our routine is now linked with them. Ashamed to say but we are in their custody now. Every time I unlock my phone, the first thing that comes to my mind is " What brought me to unlock this phone ? " and mostly the answer is " nothing " . If the answer is " something " sometimes, than that "something"  is no other than checking messages, notifications, and statistics of my social medias. It's not that every time I unlock my phone there is no logical reason. I often use it to have important communications,  to Google out my doubt or to solve my curiosity about something but after sometime that ghost of my phone takes me under it's control. So here's a question " Why are we checking our smartphone ever now and then just to find nothing (rarely something) new? or Why we remain hooked up with our smart

How to speed up your internet? 8 tips to increase your internet speed

Many of you may have internet connections at your home but sometimes your favourite social media apps or your required website may delay or deny to load. This is due to slow internet speed which is not an everyday problem to everyone but the level of irritation you get when this happens is often high. I suffered from the same problem last week and this is my experience of solving that problem which I am sharing to you today. There are various factors causing these problems. Sometimes you mess up with your router settings, sometimes your hardware might be damaged and sometimes just the way you hold your smartphone is causing the problem. Here are some methods or techniques that you can use to speed up your internet connection.

1. Basic
Make sure you turn off your router/modem and restart it again. There is high chance that the problem is due to some software issues and restarting it might solve it.
You should also disconnect all the cables, clean their attachment part, clean the port and reconnect everything as before. But make sure you don't damage the delicate parts.

2. Disconnect unnecessary devices from your network
All the devices on your network share a limited bandwidth of your internet. If more connected devices, data traffic becomes more which automatically slows down your link speed. So disconnecting unnecessary devices from your system will help a lot to improve internet speed because only required traffic flows through the path.

3. Check your smartphone or PC
Check the smartphone or PC in which you are using internet. There might be apps or activities running in background and consuming resources. You should check wireless network settings. Scan for malware/virus is also preferable.

4. Check External Interference
There are many external factors interfering your network and slowing it down. Wi-Fi signals are between the spectrum of radio wave and micro waves. These signals can get absorbed by most materials around us like concrete, metals, etc. Even the devices like your microwave oven, heat pads, Bluetooth devices, etc are known to pollute your Wi-Fi because they all operate in same frequency range. To receive the optimum speed of internet you must create less interfering environment. You must maintain shortest possible distance from your Wi-Fi router. Your devices must be dust free & if you are using wired connection, the cables must not be too long.

The Wi-Fi and cellular antenna of your smartphone is placed at the top (above camera region). That area is often obstructed by your phone case or even your hands while watching videos and playing games. If the antenna region is obstructed, your phone will not receive signals. Poor signal results in poor internet speed. Keeping your antenna clear will give you a good signal strength with good internet speed and this will also prevent your smartphone from disconnecting automatically from a network due to poor signal.

You need to try taking off your smartphone case and keeping your hands away from antenna region. This is going to help a lot.

5.  Check the hardware
Often it is observed that the incorrect type or damaged hardware is causing the problem. The first thing you need to do is to check the speed again by using another router or another modem. If the problem stays the same, you may also try another less lengthy cable. If even now the problem is not solved, go for other techniques mentioned in number 6.

6.  Check your settings
Wrong settings in your router or modem may sometime decrease your internet speed. Go through the router settings once. The settings can be accessed by using URL, username & password mentioned behind your router/modem or in the box. Do not mess up with the settings if you are not a qualified person for it. This may make the condition more worse. You can take help from your ISP as well as you can view various tutorials on the internet if you know the company & type of your router/modem. You can check your filters, firewalls and other customizations you have done to your router. If your router/modem has facility of software/firmware update than update it once (Do not update unless you are qualified for it).

7. Prefer Wired than Wireless
The connection is much interrupted in a wireless network than in wired network. Prefer wired connection for your works in office or in the system where more fast & stable connection is required (e.g. while live streaming).

8. Upgrade your data plan
If you find no problem in your overall system but still you suffer from slow internet than your data plan is not enough to your works. Contact your ISP and ask them for better data plans that fits your needs. Choose the best data plan that they have. Your internet bill might increase but you will get a good internet service.

The aluminium foil mystery

You might have heard about the use of aluminium foil to speed up your internet by wrapping it around your router antenna. But does aluminium foil speeds up your internet? The answer is somehow YES. The signals from your router spread in all directions. When you place aluminium foil behind the router, the signal spreading in that direction gets reflected back to the same side. This increases signal strength and range of Wi-Fi in the reflected side. This adds up to good internet speed.
Many researchers and tech experts are working on proving this theory correct.

Recently the researchers of Dartmouth University have actually built a 3-D printed model covered with aluminium foil which literally seems to improve signal strength and range of Wi-Fi above 50 meters in radius. They could also customize the direction of Wi-Fi signal and direct it where they want. This proved that the wave of Wi-Fi is affected by aluminium foil and specially designed models can actually increase or decrease Wi-Fi signals. Theoretically when the signal is good, the speed of internet must be better. But the actual amount of increase in speed of internet is still uncertain.

If your internet is troubling you, follow these techniques. My problem was corrected after I changed my cable. Your problem is sure to be solved. Thank me later for this. Comment down any other questions or messages.
