As a precious gift of 21st century's technology, smartphones fill a great part of our daily lives. Our routine is now linked with them. Ashamed to say but we are in their custody now. Every time I unlock my phone, the first thing that comes to my mind is " What brought me to unlock this phone ? " and mostly the answer is " nothing " . If the answer is " something " sometimes, than that "something"  is no other than checking messages, notifications, and statistics of my social medias. It's not that every time I unlock my phone there is no logical reason. I often use it to have important communications,  to Google out my doubt or to solve my curiosity about something but after sometime that ghost of my phone takes me under it's control. Why celebrities followers rise suddenly after their death?

Few weeks ago on 29 April 2020, Indian actor Irfan khan died. He had few lakhs of followers on Instagram but after his death, rise in number of his Instagram followers was significant. Same thing happened when another actor Sushant Singh Rajput died on 14 June 2020. He had about nine and a half million followers on Instagram but about a million followers increased in less than 6 hours of his death. After these incidents, many people posted before-after followers comparison on social media questioning why this happens almost every time? So here is the answer of this question from the point of view of a social media analyst.

First of all, how someone's followers or subscribers rise? Of course, When he/she trends or his/her content (posts/videos/writings) trends. Now, in the case of death of a big actor or actress, the news of his/her death trends popularly in every platform. In most cases, death of any big & important person is disclosed to public through press conferences then the news circulates through different media. Everybody starts talking about the celebrity and expressing condolences to him/her on social media. When a common person gets this surprise news, he/she will check it's trueness mostly by googling it. Even the people who were not familiar with the celebrity before his/her death will also google for the celebrity after his/her death to know more about the celebrity because everyone will be talking about that celebrity on social media & news channels. Most of the time Google recommends Instagram handle, Facebook page or YouTube channel of the person who is searched for. Like this, some people will be directed to the profile. If not from Google, a common person will go to the popular social media like Facebook, Instagram and search for the personality's name. A feel of respect and kindness arrises in a person who visits the dead person's social media profile (technically such profiles are called "memorialized profiles"). In most cases it is found that the person who visits the memorialized profile follows it as a sign of gratitude towards the dead person. Also some people check the profile almost everyday to know the recent activities of memorialized profile. Like this, there is significant rise in followers of a celebrity after he/she passes away.
